Getting your artwork ready for custom sticker printing can make the difference between stickers that pop and stickers that flop. Whether you are a graphic designer or creating your first sticker ever, proper file preparation ensures your finished product looks exactly how you envisioned it.
Start With the Right File Format
The best file formats for sticker printing are PNG, PDF, AI, and SVG. PNG files work well for raster artwork at 300 DPI or higher. Vector formats like AI and SVG are ideal because they scale to any size without losing quality.
If you only have a JPG, make sure it is at least 300 DPI at the size you want your sticker printed. A 3-inch sticker at 300 DPI means your image should be at minimum 900 x 900 pixels.
Resolution Matters More Than You Think
Low-resolution artwork is the number one cause of disappointing sticker results. Your design might look perfect on screen, but screens display at 72 DPI while print requires 300 DPI.
Quick resolution guide:
- Small stickers (1-2 inches): Minimum 600 x 600 pixels
- Medium stickers (3-4 inches): Minimum 1200 x 1200 pixels
- Large stickers (5+ inches): Minimum 1800 x 1800 pixels
Transparent Backgrounds Are Key for Die-Cut Stickers
If you want die-cut stickers that follow the shape of your design, you need a transparent background. Save your file as a PNG with transparency enabled. Our sticker builder will automatically detect the edges of your artwork and create a precise cut path around it.
Color Mode: RGB vs CMYK
Digital printers work best with RGB color mode. Unlike traditional offset printing that uses CMYK, modern digital presses produce more vibrant results from RGB files. If your colors look great on screen, they will look great printed.
Bleed and Safe Zone
Add at least 1/16 inch of bleed around your design. Bleed is extra artwork that extends beyond the cut line, ensuring no white edges appear if the cut shifts slightly. Keep important text and elements at least 1/8 inch inside the cut line.
